This is the Day that the Lord Has Made: Study of the Psalms
This is the Day that the Lord Hath Made
THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HATH MADE!
Study of the Psalms:
I am sure many people have done studies of the Psalms over the year to share what they got out of them. But…and I say but because each time we read the word of God then God allows us a little more of understanding and I guess you might say a different view point that we might have missed or not been ready for the first time. Each time I read the Word of God I get more out of it. It is not a book to be read one time and put on a shelf. It is life to our bodies and souls and a guidebook for us. The great thing is God doesn’t change a word of it but…(that but again) each time you read it then it becomes alive all over again with new meanings and insight.
Intro to the Psalms
When I think about the Psalms I think about how no matter what I might be going through there is life in the Psalms and just what I need for my heart to open back up and my soul to be rested in the Lord. It is about God’s very compassion for all of us. He has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly with us. You can’t run and hide from God and no matter where you try to go…God is there 24/7. When you are good He sees that, and when you are bad He sees that too. He is like “Super-glue” in that He stays stuck with us 24/7 from the foundations of the world and forever.
The Psalms give me great comfort, show me other’s compassions, show me God’s compassion on a fallen world, they edify me, instruct me to God’s ways, they inspire me to be better, do better, live better, and even in the worst of times they give me exactly what God wants me to have at that time. They are a love story no matter what my situation might be.
The psalmists stories went from great joy, to bitter tears, to existing in the world, and to great joy again. They are exactly the emotions we feel today as we go through our life. The feelings that show up in the Psalms are feelings we all have fear, joy, peace, depression, stress, lost love, great love, grief and sorrows, hope, faith, and everyday our feelings change, but there God is saying study my word people and you will find me talking to you about your concerns for the day. Every morning is a new joy. If you woke up today then you have something to be thankful for and another day to get not only your life in order, but to help someone else do the same thing. God doesn’t want even one lost soul, but He will allow us to be lost by choice.
The Psalms are as valuable and relevant today as when they were written. In fact, as we read the Psalms we are reading about different people’s lives. We are being shown the depth of what others felt that were in many different situations.
Many of these stories we look at them and the people that went through these things and they can boggle our mind. Some really struggled and hurt and then at times they were happy and carefree. They were “human”. They felt what we feel, hurt like we hurt, laughed like we laugh and every emotion we have can be found by someone in the book of Psalms. The one thing they did that I pray we all do is find comfort and peace in the Psalms as we go through this day of our own life. Each day is different for us and new stuff comes up all the time, but God’s words are always relevant to us. God is sufficient to take us through all of life’s difficulties and He is there always to give us the victory over every situation no matter how bad it might be.
Well David wrote a lot of the Psalms. There was also the family of Asaph which were Levites that were given responsibility for music and son in the Tabernacle. (Read 1 Chronicles 15:16-19) They wrote or compiled many of these. Then there was Solomon who wrote at least two of them. Moses, is believed, to have written Psalms 90 and 91 (for which in all the Psalms 91 helps me the most when I am feeling down or need a boost). There are also like 50 Psalms for which we are not sure who wrote them. Some tell us who wrote them like Psalm 51….a Psalm of David. Many were written by King Hezekiah during the Assyrian attack recorded in II Kings 19.
Why is it important to read the Psalms. It is because we can identify with whichever or whomever wrote them. Since they are different people who wrote many of them we see what they were going through, what they dealt with, how they dealt with things, and the outcome, but one important thing is that all the trials, tests, temptations , and doubts they had…we have them as well. When they hurt we can identify with that, but even more when they got the victory over the situation take that serious because you can have the victory as well. They are there for us to learn by, to apply different things to our life, and to know that God is as much alive right now as He was then and He cares so deeply for us that He gave His son to die and take our place for the sins we committed.
The Psalms is there for us. It is there to help us meet our needs and get the victory in our life. The Psalms are actually in like five sections:
Psalm 1-41 is about the sovereignty of God. Psalms 42-72 has to do with the redemption of God. Psalm 73-89 deals with the sanctuary of God and how we are to deal with His sanctuary. Psalm 90-106 shows us the history of God as it pertains to Israel’s background. Psalm 107-150 is about the very Word of God.
Whatever you are dealing with if you know the area that speaks about those things you can go to those Psalms and find strength for the day. One thing: you are the sanctuary now. You really need to understand that. God lives in you and you are to treat you as you would if you were standing in the midst of His sanctuary.
Hebrew poetry is a similarity of rhythm rather than the rhyming of words. This is called Parallelism. Similar thoughts. Contrasting thoughts to make its points. There can be others in Psalms but this is one of them. Another is acrostic psalms begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in orderly sequence just like ours would A-Z. Psalms 9, 10, 34, 37, 111, 112, 119 and 145. The Psalms are also divided into 16 different classifications: Messianic, prayer, praise and thanksgiving, instructions, Temple, righteous, trust, God, judgment, acrostic, penitence, complaint, hallelujah, Zion, Word of God, and deliverance. Some psalms have as their title like Psalm 22: “To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.” They are placed there as everything else is placed in the Bible to give us more understanding of what is in the Bible.
The Bible is alive people. The Word is alive. That’s enough we should jump and do a dance unto the Lord. The Bible should inspire us, guide us, lead us, teach us, grow us, and help us help others and to show us how to have the victory.
Be inspired! Be inspired by the Word of God. It is our life-line. It is God’s letter to us to show us the way. It is the “Treasure map of life” that so many look in the world for but never find it. In Matthew 26:30 Jesus and His disciples sang a hymn after the Last Supper before going to the Mount of Olives to pray and to be betrayed. This is what Psalm 118:24 is about. Think of this at the last supper Jesus sang. This was a tradition to do this. “This is the day which the Lord hath made: we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Think about that long and hard. Jesus knew his fate in just a few hours. He knew what they were going to do to Him and He still sang this song. As you think about this subject remember God knows everything. He created everything. He knew His son would die for us and His son knew it as well, yet on the very day Jesus knew was coming He still sang this song. Really look at these words. They can lift you up. If Jesus could sing this song at a time like this why can’t we?
As you go through the study of Psalms I pray that you will find joy, peace, comfort, strength, understanding, and knowledge. Then take what you learn and use it to help someone else. Be compassionate to others, forgive them, love them, bless them, and sing Psalm 118:24 just like the Lord did not matter what is going on in your life. “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” You might be hurting really bad right now. Your life might seem to have no meaning and all you have seen for a long time is pain and suffering, but I am here to tell you to rejoice in the Lord, give Him thanks, bless others and God will surely get you through whatever it is.
This is truly the day the Lord hath made….REJOICE!
